About this course

This course is directed towards foreign students and will cover six main topics, namely: living, daily life, transportation, shopping, technology and health. As the topics progress in difficulty, Taiwanese culture will also be comprehensively covered. Every topic will consist of one required reading and new vocabulary (maximum 20, non-beginner vocabulary), 2 to 4 grammar patterns, 2 activities, one piece of guided writing practice and cultural views.

What you'll learn

After making sure that the students fulfill their study obligations and obtain the desired grades, the course plan will also cover the usage of vocabulary, grammatical knowledge and any other necessary skills.

Target Learners

Students of Chinese all over the world possessing TOCFL level A1 and A2 (basic Chinese) or equivalent.

Course Features

Every unit will integrate different ways of studying. Below is a brief introduction:

1. Class preparation: Plan a small activity to offer as an introduction to the topic.

2. New Vocabulary: Apart from explaining how new vocabulary is being used, example sentences and conversation practice will also be offered in a friendly learning environment.

3. Grammar practice. The focal grammar points of every unit will be taught in depth. Apart from explaining the grammar and offering example sentences students will have the opportunity to practice and ask questions, thereby letting the students practice applying the grammar structures  themselves and making sure they truly understand and use them correctly.

4. Reading comprehension. Every unit will include a text related to the topic in order to increase the students’ reading skills, and will offer help when the students will have to write a short essay themselves.

5. Discussion questions. A discussion will be overseen following the topic of the reading text, and one to five questions will be given to the students in which they will offer their opinions on the topic. There will be a fair interaction between the teacher and the students, with the goal of engaging in a cultural exchange between them.

6. Integrated Approach. Every topic will be covered with different activities and tasks. On one hand this will allow the students to think about how to finish their tasks while also obtaining a deep understanding on the workings of that particular unit. On the other hand, students will be led on a lively path of learning new vocabulary, grammar while reviewing the content repeatedly throughout the course in order to increase their ability to recall previously learned content.

7. Writing practice. Students will have one writing assessment per unit as homework. The instructor will use discussion to stimulate students to start forming their own opinion on the topic in question, while concretely offering the main points in every paragraph and in the end coming up with a writing example. Using writing exercises can help students get familiar with structures that are often seen in written Chinese, including describing a phenomenon, narrative writing, expressing needs, describing flavors and feelings, describing people, etc.

8. Performance analysis: After the online classes have been finished and graded, the student can reflect on their own study progress. The student will be offered feedback so they can further understand the problems he/she has to tackle.
